چکیده

In this paper we start from the theory of Functional Sentence Perspective developed primarily by Firbas [1], Svoboda [12] and also later by Sgall et al. [9]. We make an attempt to formulate and implement a procedure for Czech allowing to automatically recognize which sentence constituents carry information that is contextually dependent and thus known to an addressee (theme), constituents containing new information (rheme), and also constituents bearing non-thematic and non-rhematic information (transition). The experimental implementation of the procedure uses tools developed in NLP Centre, FI MU, particularly the morphological analyzer Majka [17], disambiguator DESAMB [16] and parser SET [5]. As a starting data resource we use a small corpus of 120 Czech sentences, which at the moment does not include a free continuous text. This is motivated by the fact that we do not use syntactically pre-tagged text but perform syntactic analysis directly using the parser SET. Thus, we offer only a very basic evaluation, which captures the main FSP phenomena and shows that the task is feasible. The toolset developed for the experiment consists of two parts: first, a chunker, which determines word-order positions from the parse tree of a sentence, second, an FSP tagger which is the implementation of the procedure. It labels the chunks with the tags of what is further called functional elements (e.g. theme proper, transition, rheme proper). An experimental version is available at http://nlp. fi.muni.cz/~xsvobo15/fsp/fsp.html.

Marking Theme and Rheme in Preverbal Messages *

Combinatory Categorial Grammar (Steedman, 2000, 2006) shows that certain intonational patterns in English mark an utterance’s theme and rheme (L+H* and H*, respectively). The incremental conceptualiser (inC) can be extended to produce preverbal messages (semantic representations) containing the required marking of theme and rheme for pointing out a mismatch between the maps in the Map Task. Thi...

Dual function of first position nominal groups in research article titles: Describing methods and structuring summary

Previous research has identified the nominal group as the most distinctive feature of the research article title. In contrast, the findings reported in this paper suggest Theme/Rheme is the dominant structure in title text. Theme/Rheme structures order and tie nominal groups in titles. When a title starts with a methodological term the first position nominal group acts as a theme marker. Thus, ...

A Research on EFL Reading Teaching from the Perspective of Theme-Rheme Theory with Broad Network Materials

Theme-Rheme theory is one of the important components in text linguistics, which is closely related to language teaching and learning. This paper applies the Theme-Rheme theory in EFL reading teaching for nonEnglish majors in college, and explores its influence on students’ EFL reading proficiency. The result of this study proves that the Theme-Rheme theory is an effective system and it has cer...

The Interaction between Information and Intonation Structure: Prosodic Marking of Theme and Rheme

Several studies have investigated the relation between information structure and intonation structure. Few studies however have investigated this relationship empirically using natural face-to-face conversations. The current study explores this relation using a large corpus of face-to-face conversations on a map navigation task. In this task dialogue partners sometimes do and sometimes do not h...
